A Great Offering from the Maple Grove Library:

We are excited to announce that Maple Grove Library will be offering “Work of Art: Business Classes for Artists,” beginning March 11. This is a 10-part series of business classes for artists of all kinds (musicians, writers, painters, sculptors, etc.). Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings. Participants sign-up for each class individually, online at www.hclib.org or by phone, 612-543-6450. These classes are popular—please register early. Classes are free.

“Work of Art” is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. It’s presented in collaboration with Springboard for the Arts.

Series description:

1.            Work of Art: Career Planning for Artists (3/11/14)

Where do you want to be both artistically and professionally? This session concentrates on examining your career and developing a career plan. Learn how to define your goals, identify strategies for achieving your objectives and developing your career path.

2.            Work of Art: Time Management for Creative People (3/18/14)

Are you a right-brained person living in a left-brained world?  Learn approaches for getting control of your day, creating work time and reaching your artistic goals.

3.            Work of Art: Your Promotional Toolkit (3/25/14)

What should be in your portfolio? We also will talk about targeting your résumé, choosing a work sample, and composing the catalog page that accompanies it (does this refer to the work sample?). Feel free to bring promotional materials along for review.

4.            Work of Art: Marketing for Artists (4/1/14)

Identify the right audience for your artistic output. Develop marketing strategies and a marketing plan geared to your target audience.

5.            Work of Art: Legal Considerations for Artists (4/8/14)

From protecting your intellectual property to choosing a legal form for your artistic business, an understanding of underlying legal principles will help you make smarter choices. Learn about copyrights and contract basics regarding selling and licensing your work, as well as getting into business.

6.            Work of Art: Recordkeeping and Financial Management for Artists (4/22/14)

Does your actual income match your desired income? Learn clear, simple methods for setting up your financial books, how budgets and cash flow statements can help you plan for profit and make accurate projections about what to expect.

7.            Work of Art: Simple Business Plans for Artists (4/29/14)

What does it take to grow your artistic business, a.k.a. your career? Start with preparing a simple business plan in arts-friendly language, which is an essential planning tool for any small business (even if you’re “just a painter!”).

8.            Work of Art: Pricing Your Work (5/6/14)

How can you ensure that you are fairly compensated for the art you create? Learn what to consider when setting a price for your work or the services you provide.

9.            Work of Art: Funding Your Work (5/13/14)

Learn how to generate income. Topics discussed: the value of multiple income streams, research and application preparation techniques for grants, fellowships, scholarships, residency programs available to individual artists and the importance of community partners as a strategy for expanding your audience and appealing to potential funders.

10.         Work of Art: Social Media for Artists (5/20/14)

Social media is everywhere these days. How and which online tools are worth your time and energy, and can help you market your work, stay abreast of your field, and connect with your clients and colleagues?
